The sumo wrestler looks each other in the eyes and squats down low. Both wrestlers put one fist on the ground. Their eyes do not part. With the eye contact and concentration, they agree and synchronize the starting of the match immediately as the other fist touches the ground, "gyouji" (referee) shouts the starting call and they begin. This is called "Tachiai".
