In the Edo period (1603-1868), on a rainy day during the festival of Iris (until 5th of May on the lunar calendar) samurais hoisted carp streamers to wish for boy's success and health. In an ancient historical record, carps become a dragon when they swim their way up a waterfall. From the story, carps represent success in life.
