Decorated floats are one of the many features of gion festival. "Koiyama" float has existed since the Muromach period (1336-1573). The idol of worship on the float is a 1.5m long wooden carved carp swimming up a waterfall. Inspired by Chinese folklore, when a carp swims up the waterfall he will become a dragon. Symbolizing, breaking through hardships and being successful in life.
